Description

This distinctive and highly stylized composition by artist John McCrea really stands out from the group of variant covers that launched The Mandalorian season one adaptation last year. I love how McCrea used patch hatching technique throughout, which I think accentuates the movement and energy of this piece. Drawing the blaster almost twice the size gives weight to the weapon and also makes it look more intimidating. It reminds me of Hellboy’s Samaritan. Some mostly minor revisions were done to the cover later for printing, I’m sure at the request from Marvel. Most notable revision is Grogu’s toned down facial features and expression. McCrea's gritty style is perfect for Mando. Great looking cover!

The art looks like it came out of the rough and tumble b&w comics magazine era of the 70's with this style of hatching. Europeans and Phillipine influences gave a more sophisticated look for the more mature stories found them.

I really enjoyed John's SW work on the Tales title back in the Dark Horse days. Glad to see he's been selected to do some of the modern cover work.
