Description

Acclaimed comic book writer and artist Walter Simonson once wrote about this particular Pogo strip:

"I always loved this daily. I didn't generally clip newspaper strips, but I kept this one. I don't think at the time I even recognized the pun involved. There was just something about the characters and their dialogue and interaction that cracked me up.

"Still does.

"Once in a blue moon, I'll simply break out in a loud "One don't get down off'n a planet, Churchy. One gets down off'n a duck! WOW! Plinkety plinkety plangk!"

"So far, I've managed to avoid detention.

"😉"

On the reverse, the strip has Walt Kelly's blue pencil drawing for part of the second tier of his initial draft of the Sunday strip for 30 October 1966. I added the lettering in Photoshop to make it readable.

It's such a precious strip showing how Kelly would have drawn human characters. Precise yet very warm brush line.
