DescriptionI've had very few opportunities to pick up favorite examples of a strip, so I'm thrilled to be able to add this wonderful Pogo daily strip to my collection. Dated February 4, 1967, the strip features Porky Pine and Beauregard Bugleboy, with Porky relating the famous proverb, "In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king". When Beauregard claims that to be his favorite quote, Porky continues with "But, in the land of the insane, the half-wit is hanged", with Beauregard's response.I tend not to look for examples of the strip from this late in the run, but this has long been one of my favorite Pogo strips, so my time-frame goes out the window. I wish the scan could do more justice to the brush work in the strip. Kelly pulled out all the stops on his wonderful trees, creating lush textures and shadows. And that cute frog and butterfly in the last panel is the icing. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Social/Sharing |

I like the ones with memorable quotes. The art is always terrific. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Extra care went into the borders of the word balloons for emphasis for these two truths. Better to play dumb with the rest of the mob or be singled out by them.

I love that one too. Congratulations on acquiring it (and outbidding me)! I'm glad to see a nice scan of it and that it is in good hands.

I actually prefer his art from this period compared to some of the very early fifties stuff. Think he improved massively in a few years and went on producing superior work. He worked on such a high level for so many years.
