Description

See this gallery’s main page for background on the significance of this issue. After an opening splash page that (typical for this era) functions more like a second cover, the story begins here. College student Linda Lee Danvers is feeling listless. She goes shopping to boost her serotonin and recognizes Diana Prince as the proprietor of the cute boutique. "Some new clothes are in order" turns out to be prophetic, as Diana will give Supergirl a completely new costume by the end of the issue.

This sort of crossover cameo happened all the time at Marvel Comics but was unusual at DC. However, Mike Sekowsky was writing, drawing, and editing both Adventure Comcs and the mod version of Wonder Woman at the time, so he did not have to ask anyone’s permission for this cross-promotion of his two titles.

Stories of this era were inconsistent as to whether the public at large knew that Diana Prince had been Wonder Woman before losing her powers. Here Linda recognizes her immediately for the benefit of readers. Diana doesn’t have any dialogue yet, but her shop assistant Cathy Perkins does. She was a teen runaway rescued from sex trafficking in WW #185 -- another topic evidencing DC's transition into the Bronze Age.

The words "week end" in the first caption were a correction made by slicing the original word off the page, then taping a new word in its place. The caption "Soon" in panel 5 is pasted onto the page. As typical in this story, the faces show white-out, probably where the second inker corrected the first.

Linda’s dorm room has a typewriter and plush snake. Upcoming issues will see her leave her Stanhope College for a media job in San Francisco. The caption implies that Stanhope is a suburb of Gotham City. Was that previously established? Even so, Diana Prince's boutique is supposed to be in Manhattan, not Gotham City as depicted here.

Panel three is the first time that Linda was shown owning or driving a car, at least in her Adventure Comics tenure. Linda was shown as a passenger in her roommate’s convertible once before, and also once took a “high speed train to Metropolis” instead of flying.

Diana franchises her stores.  Imagine all the other heroes only shop at her stores to be fashion trend setters.  Very nice heavy inks on these panels where Sekowsky's romance comic experience came into play.  This was his first issue of Adventure comics and he was changing it up from the Schaffenberger, etc. house style to be more in tune with the times.
