Abraham Stone talks to his cat and falls asleep. He dreams about his suffering mother and younger brother. His dreams move to his father's recollection of serving in the Union Army when he was only 12 years old and how they had to move after the war to Pennsylvania.

A Kubert dream sequence with faces distorted in pain? Kubert drawing the Civil War? Yes, that's what drew me to this page.

Pulls at the heartstrings with that center sequence. Joe Kubert expresses a guilt of leaving family behind and Stone's humble origins as only he can weaving emotion and history.
