Description

Of the "regular" Sandman interior artists, Mike Dringenberg and (the late) Marc Hempel would have to rank as my two favorites. I was able to cross Dringenberg off of the want list several years ago but to this point had not managed to get a published page from the series penciled by Hempel. That situation has now been remedied.

People either seem to love or hate Hempel's art on the series, given how stylized and "cartoony" it is. Personally, I think he does the best version of Desire - with exhibit A being the portrait of him/her in the first panel. Couple that with Rose's memorable soliloquy on love and the gorgeous third panel, and this was a page I couldn't turn down when given the opportunity to acquire it.

The cartoony look by design is the exact effect needed to jar your attention and challenge us to read mood and atmosphere into the images and story.
