DescriptionJust picked up this gorgeous Lawrence Sterne Stevens pen and ink illustration in a recent trade. Thanks Roger! It was used in Startling Stories - October 1952 as the title page illustration for the short story "Throwback" written by Miriam Allen de Ford. And notice the creepy computer face in the background checking out the beautiful babe on the couch! Hints of AI from over 70 years ago! I think it will be extremely difficult to find a better example by Stevens than this fantastic illustration.Social/Sharing |

Terrific! I noticed the creepy computer first! Not sure what that means. :)

The spotlight beam does it for me! It lowers the density of the crosshatching in that field and cutting right through to illuminate such a beautiful face.

Wow! The penmanship and use of crosshatching here is exquisite!

Wonderful illustration that perfectly captures the lighting in this dramatic scene. The genius of this artwork is when you reduce it the computer face becomes more apparent. Stevens working in a way that understands the final print in pulp is bound to lose detail and yield the perfect presentation!
