Description

In 1986, the world of comics was rocked by an earthquake that saw its old codes crumble and new ones emerge, spurred on by the genius of Miller and with the help of Dick Giordano at the editorial helm of DC Comics. The innovation of The Dark Knight Returns in its graphics and in its distinctly darker, more emotionally charged script, has left an indelible mark on comic book pop culture and is easily one of the most important comic series published in the US in the 1980s. In fact, the revolutionary series is now universally acknowledged as one of the most important stories in the history of American superhero comics, completely reinventing Batman and the Joker, DC's most popular superhero and villain, and serving as the template for the characters ever since. And one of the key scenes in that series was the final showdown between the two archenemies, as seen here on these two mind-blowingly great consecutive pages. It's a dramatic confrontation that ends with a powerful half-splash page panel of the injured Batman walking away from the still-smiling deceased Joker. These two pages alone represent the nirvana of this series, the final phase in the almost legendary confrontation between Batman and his arch-nemesis, the Joker, who will keep us smiling right to the end. In short, these two pages are the crème de la crème of any collection worthy of the name.
