Description

Frederick Gruger was an unbelievable golden age illustrator who is completely under-appreciated. He was widely admired and famous in his day, but is now all but forgotten. This is a typical Gruger piece - published around 1920 in Good Housekeeping in a story entitled, “The Magic Province.” Large, detailed, gorgeous. Graphite and charcoal on board (18” x 11”).

It's in a class of its own! These are often accompanying parables that are drawn to look like man is in paradise and will somehow mess it up out of their own human nature.

I would not say that this is "typical" Gruger work (from what I've seen). This one is a stand-out!
