The trade paperback of “Star Wars: Union” collected all four issues of the wedding of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade. The cover art, which measured 10” x 15.5,” was created by Terese Nielsen who had these memories to share:

This was great fun to do! It's a mixed media piece. I used the computer in the beginning stages to layer in photos of roses I took, then Photoshopped them into my final sketch. I printed that out and completed the painting on top of the print out. I used a “gouache wash” technique in the background to get the stained glass feel. Luke and Mara are painted with acrylic and colored pencil. And as you may have noticed, I love putting gold leaf in pieces, and the two panels on the side have gold leaf textured into them. All in all, it was a fun-filled media experimentation frenzy!

Terese was kind enough to participate in an interview with Jade Crusades in 2001 at San Diego Comic-Con. Here is an excerpt from that interview:

What preparations did you go through before producing the “Star Wars: Union” trade paperback cover for Dark Horse Comics?
I searched out several Mara websites, Jade Crusades being one of them, and read up on whatever I could find. Dark Horse also sent along the previously published comics that detailed the story I was illustrating. They also sent along the magazine that featured four or five photos of Shannon. The selection of images was extremely limiting though.

You have depicted some of the most important times of Mara Jade's life - her marriage to Luke Skywalker, and her pregnancy. What was it like working on such significant pieces?

It was odd creating images for these momentous occasions of this very significant character that was never a part of the Star Wars movies. I'm sure if I had been reading all the Expanded Universe books it wouldn't have been as jarring. But I thought it was very cool to be asked to portray these intimate periods in Luke and Mara's history.
