DescriptionAt the Wichita Air Capital Con this year, Kevin Nowlan offered tickets for a raffle of a limited number of spots on his commission list. I was overjoyed to learn that I was one of the lucky winners! I will forever cherish the conversation that Mr. Knowlan and I had about how Jack Kirby was an impressionist with his treatment of shadows in his superhero work. He noted how Kirby could avoid working out complicated silhouettes under groups of advancing figures by using a squiggle. The same approach, we concluded, allowed Kirby to forego conventional lighting techniques in favor of a balance of black and white baked into the design of his characters. Check out that battle helm and tell me that you love Kirby as much as Kevin Nowlan and I do :) Thank you so much for the wonderful conversation and drawing, Mr. Nowlan!Social/Sharing |

The helmet is so big and chunky with a great deal of weight to it as well. When inked by Nowlan, you'll get that sense because of the different lineweights done in geometric precision.

Fantastic "themed" choice of commission and conversation, Doc, and CONGRATS on scoring a spot on Kevin's list! Beautiful exact linework counterpointed with just the right amount of "squiggle". :) It's always cool to walk out of a con with a new piece of art, but also leaving with a unique interaction with a favorite creator? Priceless. Congrats again, Doc!

Awesome you were able to pick this up while having a great convo with Kevin, and about the King! Great Barda here - one of the best comic designs ever. Congrats!

Gorgeous piece!! I also had to go the Kirby route when I was lucky enough to get a commission from Mr. Nowlan and he has a magnificent way with the Fourth World characters. Congrats!
