DescriptionWhen I commissioned Bruno to draw a Captain America scene a few years ago (a piece I am woefully delinquent in scanning and adding to my gallery), I was unfamiliar with his work. However, I was intrigued by his commission samples, especially this spectacular Conan piece with its gorgeous use of positive and negative space. So, it was my great fortune to find this one for sale at the most recent CAF Live event. Even better, the seller was Andy, aka Kent Mansley here on CAF. Andy and I have a LOT of overlap in our artistic tastes, and he was kind enough to reach out a few years back and strike up a conversation. I really enjoyed our back and forth, which included discussing this very piece. When I saw he was selling it, I jumped to make it mine. In addition to the phenomenal negative space usage here, I appreciate the little details Bruno included to complete the storytelling. A quick glance at the figures on the right and left clues us in on the killing stroke that did them in, and I love how the horn on the center figure was decapitated in the same stroke that severed the arm. And, of course, Conan’s center placement, size and the white of his skin grab the eye first and hold it where Bruno wanted it, in what I have to assume is a recreation of the opening scene from The Frost Giant’s Daughter. Thanks so much for finding this one into my hands, Andy. I hope you and I get to chinwag in person one day. Social/Sharing |

You can hear the silent snowfall as each fallen warrior has had time to process and accept their fate to go to the afterlife.
