DescriptionAl McWilliams The Lovin' Blooms Unpublished Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 3 (c. 1960s). These three daily strips are a great example of a try out story arc by artist Al McWilliams. They were most likely used as pitch pieces to get his story picked up by syndications. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with image areas of 21" x 5.75". Two of the boards are consecutive and taped together.McWilliams appears to have created two or three weeks of dailies and Sundays for The Lovin' Blooms in order to pitch the strip (apparently unsuccessfully) to syndicates. These are 3 strips from the 2nd week of the strip as noted in top margin. This strip features Len and Mary Gatwood (parents of the recently wed Carol Bloom nee Gatewood; her new husband is Calvin Bloom; the couple was christened "The Lovin' Blooms" by family friend Rudy Schmerk). The newlyweds have arrived back home from their honeymoon, and Len is practicing his putting and Mary thinks the wedding photos make her look fat (careful Len, how you answer that question!). This rare strip features nicely designed layouts and McWilliams' usual excellent inking I keep looking for a "Twin Earths"; Social/Sharing |

Very cool. I love tryout strips. McWilliams draws girls so well, it is too bad he didn't get to really showcase what he could do on these.

The top 2 are slow paced, the panel designs are virtually identical.
