DescriptionA year before Alan Moore's Watchmen triumph, Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme max-series showed how to use a superhero team to tell a thoughtful geopolitical allegory. In 2004, J. Michael Straczynski had the opportunity to re-use the same JLA-inspired characters in Supreme Power for Marvel's MAX line, which like DC's Vertigo imprint permitted R-rated elements. After eighteen issues, the story continued in the PG-13 title Squadron Supreme as a regular Marvel book, albeit still distinct from the 616 universe. By this issue, a team has coalesced to enact American foreign policy. This issue seems them invading a Middle Eastern country "that makes the Taliban look like card-carrying members of the ACLU." (The Farsi language is mentioned, so the country is Iran, though that name is never used.) The hope is that a show of force will terrify the populace into more moral (i.e. more Western) behavior. This page features the hot-tempered Inertia (standing in for Black Canary), who previously killed her own father after discovering he had murdered her mother. She has met a young Persian girl in a similar situation and, on this page, gives her an opportunity to execute the men of her family who have honor-killed her female relatives. What happens to such a girl next, after the superheroes go home? Inertia is not thinking that far ahead, which is emblematic of the tragedy building in this series, as a metaphor of blundering American interventionism. Social/Sharing |

Great piece! It's a great period in Gary Frank's career after Midnight Nation and going exclusive with Marvel. It's where his style became more of an illustrator because it conveyed a more mature tone.
