Description

Lately, I have been on a quest for works by the "old masters". This is the Jungle Jim topper that accompanied Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon Sunday from 25 April 1943... almost exactly 5 years after the other topper I posted from 1938. You can see the subtle changes in style Raymond made over that time.

In this strip, Jim is on a ship when an attractive girl, claiming to be an art student, asks if he will pose for a portrait. The likeness is perhaps too good as Kolu spies the girl showing the picture to a strange man. You have to love those sultry Raymond women!

The strip was rendered in ink over graphite on an illustration board and is initialed "AR" in the last panel.
