DescriptionI thought I’d won this one during March’s Heritage auction. After a little back and forth bidding during the live auction, the hammer went down with my winning bid and the page swiped to the next lot up for auction.Only I didn’t win. For the first time ever in all my years of watching auctions, the lot cycled back after the next lot appeared. Now, maybe this has happened before. Admittedly, I don’t pay close attention until the items I’m interested in are getting close. But I won’t lie, I was pretty incensed. All of a sudden, I had to keep bidding up the price on a piece I’d already won against a newly persistent opponent. However, after feeling I already won, I was rage bidding and would not be denied. LOL. Thankfully, it all worked out in my favor and I was able to add another For All Seasons page to my collection. This one is the introduction of Jenny Vaughn (who Superman saved from a burning building in the prior issue) as Toxin, a hero who only wanted to help Metropolis like her idol Superman. It’s an upbeat start to what becomes the most gut-wrenching scene in the miniseries. The back cover blurb for issue 3 nails it when it says “The first citizen of Metropolis, bowed but not yet beaten. An entire city, felled by a foe that Superman cannot battle. And a moment in which Superman learns that not all lives can be saved. This is the gripping story of Superman’s dread realization that even his powers are not always enough.” As always, Tim’s storytelling is so clean. His three-tiered layout and composition guides our eye through the page in a perfect Z that runs across the horizontal top panel, then down the gun through the large middle panel and back across the staccato panels that make up the beats of the bottom tier; one for each of our three characters.
