DescriptionMy friend Domingos on the possible hand of Gisela Dester on the washes in Sgt. Kirk:"No one knows these things for sure, of course, but we can try our educated guesses. A few facts first: "Sgt. KIrk" was published in Misterix magazine from #225 (Jan. 1, 1953) until #475 (Dec. 20, 1957). During all those years there are no washes at all (Misterix was published by Abril). Then, Oesterheld founded his, with his brother Jorge, publishing house, Frontera. "Sgt. Kirk" appeared again in Hora Cero Suplemento Semanal (the weekly supplement to Hora Cero - zero hour - magazine, which was monthly). The series appeared from May 14, 1958 until the end in November of 1959, but, by then, it was not drawn by Hugo Pratt. Gisela Dester drew two stories in another magazine, Frontera Extra in 1960, 1961. The time frame, mid 1958, 1959, tells me that, yes, Gisela Dester did the washes in Sgt. Kirk. The problem is that Hugo Pratt did great washes when he returned to Europe, so, I don't know if he started doing washes that early or not. I guess not because I doubt that he cared for the extra work... As I mentioned at the beginning, this is all guesswork on my part, but Gisela did the washes in "Ticonderoga," if not more... Of that, at least, we are sure..." Auction Description - Pencil, pastel and ink on thin cardboard. Original comic art done by Pratt for "Il castello di Titlàn", page 45 of the last adventure of Il Sergente Kirk published for the first time in Argentina on Hora Cero Suplemento Semanal n. 78 by Editorial Frontera in February 1959, reprinted in Italy in the volume "Il Sergente Kirk" by ANAFI in 2008. The setting is presented with such grandeur! We get three views of the same setting, but each time drawn in slightly different scale.

Masterful design with the three right hand panels expanding as you go down the page but mirroring the castle in all give such a grounding visually and spatially to the strip. Pratt's Argentinian work doesn't get nearly enough attention.
