DescriptionD.C. Comics. July, 2005.Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. Originally published as a 5-issue miniseries then collected and renamed "Luthor", being republished numerous times in graphic novel format. This Poison Ivy cameo directly precedes the brief showdown between Batman & Superman in the story. In comic books, nothing is a coincidence - this is Ivy. She appears in the previous page first setting up the interaction, and is prominently featured here. It's such a beautiful piece, just look at her hair and the folds in her dress, the reflections in the back are equally as impressive. Hard to believe it's vintage! A big thanks to Mike for the trade. This is the literal issue that Lee began refining his photo-realistic style he's become known for. Seen on this page is layered graphite & ink which mimics the effect he would later use with inkwash. From a 2021 interview with Richard Friend, Lee says: "I remember there was this specific point in time where I was working on Lex Luthor: Man of Steel.. and that was kind of the tipping point for me. People at D.C. were really wanting results, you know, and I started to half way through that push this totally other thing. [In the] third issue I started to push this pencil rendering style. The third issue took me the longest and it was because I was just getting into this rendering thing. And I was into Chuck Close, and I was doing this cubist stuff, and that was too when the Phil Hale thing kind of.. I was getting really obsessive with these painters and I wanted to do that in the art." From the Personal Collection of Jim Lee. Social/Sharing |

That Poison Ivy is fantasti-gorgeous! I would've gone into the weeds for that one too. Congratulations, Phil, and Happy New Year!

Looks very 70's with Farrah and two sleazy businessmen in a typical hot LA afternoon!

Wow! I can see it--This IS the beginning of Lee Bermejo's transition into the photorealistic technique he has now mastered. Most of the page is familiar to us as the style he was working in then, but then you notice...Poison Ivy. And there it is--Starting with the hair which is realistically tousled, and then the shoulders with the hint of ink wash to give it a roundedness, and then delicate way Lee handled the ruffles of his dress, and the way he rendered her breasts...BINGO! A new style is born! Thanks so much for sharing this page with us. I've long admired Lee's style but to see where it all began is a revelation!
