Description

I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never gonna keep me down.

With those words I was introduced to Jennifer Walters, and she quickly became one of my all-time favorite characters thanks to Dan Slott.

IMHO, this is a perfect first issue. We’re introduced to Jen in this flashback to her college days, where we see her unhappy and alone. We then quickly transition into the modern day, where Jen is living full-time as She-Hulk and everything is going great for her. She’s saving the world with the Avengers, winning multi-billion-dollar lawsuits and dating a supermodel. Everything is coming up Jen.

Until it isn’t. With a deft hand, Slott quickly pulls the rug from under her. She loses her job, her boyfriend, and even her spot in Avengers Mansion. He then sets up the remainder of his first twelve issues by offering Jen everything she’s ever wanted; a job at the firm GLK&H.

There’s only one catch. They want Jen, not She-Hulk.

And so we embark on one of my all-time favorite runs in comics. Those first twelve issues are note perfect to me and I’ve reread them countless times. However, I passed on Juan Bobillo’s art from the book back in the day, and only finally was able to track down a page last year.

So, imagine my surprise when Nico Risso, Eduardo’s son, announced he was now repping Juan and had a bunch of She-Hulk pages for sale. Well, I made sure to snag every page I could from that first issue, including this opening page.

While I enjoyed his art when I read the book, Juan’s work has grown on me immensely with each passing reread. His style is extremely expressive, and just look at how much he gives you on the page here.

That first panel sets the entire run up perfectly. Juan doesn’t skimp on the detail, as there’s people carrying a keg, making out in the hallway and having all kinds of fun inside. Meanwhile, Jen’s door is closed, and the way the white of it pierces the shadow highlights how devoid of all activity it is.

Then we get our first look at Jen. Buried in a book, she takes a break to go into the bathroom and plug her ears with cotton in a great third tier punctuated by a dynamite facial expression, before closing with a long shot from behind to emphasize how alone she is.

What a thrill to own the page that kicked off my love of Shulkie.

I loved that run and Bobillo's art played a big part in that enjoyment.

Dan Slott is one of the best story tellers in the business and I love Bobillo's art.

For whatever reason I never read this run. Now I need to.
