Description

Daily, October 10, 1956.

From the first arc featuring Mr. Pig, who bore a remarkable resemblance to a certain Russian named Khrushchev (who in turn very much resembled a pig). There's some old politics to unpack here; the parrot who agrees with everything Mr. Pig says is a caricature of Nikolai Bulganin, who was USSR premier at the time but very much a junior partner to Khrushchev (and K booted him out in '58). Note also the subtle dig toward his predecessor, a possible reference to Khruschev's "destalinization" campaign -- after the old mass murderer was safely dead.

And the cowbirds are beginning to morph into the Beatnik hipsters they became!

I've said I think politics ultimately hurt the strip, particularly in the latter sixties, but in '56 Kelly was still at the top of his game.

Some of these political strips serve as allegory much Animal Farm by Orwell. Walt Kelly's line is impressive as always to achieve this balance of satire while still appealing to those who don't know.
