DescriptionI'm thrilled to finally add a piece from Sam Kieth! He's been on my bucket list for a long time and his art doesn't come available often and when it does it has always felt out of reach.I was hooked on his art as a teenager seeing his work on Marvel Comics Presents with Wolverine, The Maxx comic, and The Maxx cartoon on MTV's Liquid Television. His style felt otherworldly, boundary pushing, and groundbreaking compared to the house style that dominated comics in the 90's. Fantagraphics published this piece in I before E issue 2 in 1992 as a portfolio piece about a year before Image Comics started releasing Kieth's The Maxx. This piece felt like the perfect predecessor to Kieth's work on The Maxx and Marvel Comics Presents with the feral creature in the jungle setting and the late 80's into the early 90's felt like a peak period for Kieth, through my nostalgic lens. As a fun aside, this issue also featured the very first Maxx (Max the Hare) story. I originally saw this piece at NYCC 2022 but didn't have the funds to pick it up. Thankfully it was never listed online and it was still available. Huge thanks to Albert Moy for making this one possible! Social/Sharing |

The right time period of Kieth art! You even get that angry feral look in the face of the tiger!

To me, this is the best period of Kieth art and this portfolio was indicative of just how strong an artist he was at the time.

Big collector box checked, man, congrats! So cool how he's emerging from the bush, and love how the rest of the partially silhouetted jungle is used to frame him. Great detail throughout, too. Kinda reminded me of Shere Khan, and that's a good thing :) And from the the first Maxx story?! BONUS.

Just gorgeous! The tiger itself is outstanding, but the lush jungle detail here really shines. Shows how talented Sam Kieth is of an artist and makes for a great piece to add to the collection. Also love to see that it's from the first issue with a Maxx story in it! Big congrats!
