DescriptionOffered here is story page 22 from Flash Gordon 12 which had a cover date of February 1969. This is from the first issue published by Charlton, who took over producing the comic book from King Features.Likewise, Crandall was the hand-picked successor of Al Williamson who drew stories for the first few issues if the King Features run. Crandall was a long-time friend of Williamson, going back to the EC days. This page is from the 24-page story titled, "Flash Gordon Meets Sheng the Savage!" The story begins with Flash, Dale, and Dr. Zarkov enjoy an afternoon riding "Tharks" (obviously a Burroughs reference. A ship lands nearby and an envoy tells Flash that Prince Barin needs to see him immediately. Arriving in ALania, Barin shows Flash images of a strange green light that can destroy without sound or explosive power and warns him of Sheng the Savage who wants to conquer Mongo. Flash and Dale were relaxing next to a pool when Sheng's ship is sighted. They dive into the pool, but the green light appears, cutting a swath, reducing the buildings, and their friends, to dust. Flash leaps to action, only to be shot down by Sheng's ships. They race to a jungle fortress (Sheng's base), climb the walls, and are immediately captured. Sheng tells them that he is the son of Kang the Conqueror and has gone to war as revenge for his father and throws Flash into a cell with Kang. They fight, and after defeating Kang, Flash and Zarkov escape to meet Sadolore, a woman they thought was a slave but is Sheng's adopted daughter. She ultimately helps Flash and Zarkov escape and destroy Sheng's fortress. My wife thinks Crandall used Marilyn Monroe as a model for Sadalore... she might be right. A lot of intrigue, deception, and betrayal happens in 24 pages. This is page 22, near the end of the story, and shows Sadalore running interference for Flash and Zarkov, a nice fight panel, and then they are off to Sodalore's terrace and a waiting rocket to escape. The page has an image area of 10 x 15" on a larger 11 x 17" piece of 2-ply Bristol. The page is in excellent shape considering that it is 55 years old. As usual with me, shipping is not included in the price. I prefer checks or money orders (I know, I am a dinosaur). If you need to use PayPal, I need that to be sent as a "Gift" or "Friends and Family". I apologize in advance if that is an inconvenience. Social/Sharing |
