Did Image really publish this? How the heck did this ever get picked up and distributed?

This piece was in a featured auction that Bill Cox's Youtube Channel previewed and broadcasted. It is a Lake Como exclusive variant cover so they knew mostly adults would attend the event.

I get that no kids would be expected at the con in Italy, but I still find it surprising that Image would publish it. Anyway, I still prefer Strips #2 inside front cover!

Yes, but this is a vampire. They have a certain sex appeal in modern pop culture (Twilight). Besides, it's for the European market and not for the prudish American book burning types. Image gets away with more violence in the US if you've ever read Invincible where every battle is a bloodfest. Strips #2 inside cover and my lost comment still itches.

Oh, I'm aware about the vampire sex appeal, but given that Image is an American publisher, it still surprises me that they would go ahead and publish this. After all, the convention it was an exclusive for may indeed be in Europe which has far more liberal views on sex and sexuality than the populace of the far more prudish North America does, but quite a large percentage of the convention goers seems to be American. So I would've guessed that Image wouldn't want to take the risk that the comic may be seen by that one person who decides to alert Bleeding Cool News to it so that the story could blow up here. I guess they lucked out though, because this is the first I'm seeing and hearing about this cover, so I guess the American Comics News sites didn't get their hands on a copy.

What news sites? They have no teeth. All the discourse happens online now. Especially when Mr. Ride On drops bombs on your show.

Yes, god forbids young americans EVER seeing a representation of a penis in a work of art (comics, classic paintings, statues...).
Especially young boys, obviously, as it would really be traumatic to them ;)

Amusingly, it appears that it is glamorous for mordern vampires to shave their balls but not their pubis (unless it is a -gasp-pubis shadow?) ^^

Hate to break it to you, but Bleeding Cool already did an article on the two covers he did, and there wasn't the pearl clutching you're expecting... https://bleedingcool.com/comics/olivier-coipel-blood-stained-teeth-exclusives-at-lake-como-comic-con/

I'm not sure why you "hate to break it to me", André, as I'm the one who had a very cartoony, almost animation style giant penis deleted from my gallery by the CAF Gestapo. I'm glad to see that the news WAS picked up by Bleeding Cool and that, amazingly, it made no waves. As James Dornoff says up above, it's great that full male genitalia depicted in comic art can provide some wonderful discourse.

It's all good, buddy. I might've read your tone wrong in your earlier posts. Damn internet. lol. I don't think I ever saw your deleted post - the stuff CAF allows on here, I'm surprised it was removed. 😮

No, I only expressed surprise that Image would 'risk' publishing this because of the typically puritanical views we see on the North American continent. I have zero problem with nudity in art as long as it's done tastefully. Which, judging by so much of the hardcore xxx sex scenes posted here, is sadly not usually the case.

They wanted me to remove a couple of pages of Roberto Baldazzini's Beba (surprisingly NOT a Frank Thorne page and others with huge penises on display), but I said: "He's an acclaimed artist and illustrator, published throughout the world, and I have placed the original artworks in a restricted room, specifying that it contains sexually explicit material. So where's ACTUALLY the problem?". They finally left me alone 😼

I understand and share Ruben's amazement, but I fear that this is the legacy of the highly chauvinist and homophobic society in which we all grew up and still live. I'm not saying that showing some penis on the cover is the cure, but I hope that our kids are much less surprised or shocked to see it than we are. By the way, Olivier Coipel is a great talent and this painting is yet more proof of that!

Even though it's not my thing, it's always refreshing to see one naked guy for every 5000 naked girls on CAF. Coipel has an elegant touch with mixed media. Congratulations on this thought-provoking piece.

Loving that comic art can bring such wonderful discourse. Fantastic art piece, congrats on this find. I really like Coipel's work and this painting showcases his talent well.

Olivier does such nice painted work and there aren't so many examples around. Congrats, both of the 'life drawing' covers he did were this perfect mix of sexy and elegant.
