DescriptionOriginal artwork for Tales of the Teen Titans #2 (DC, 1982), by the late legend George Pérez (pencils) and Pablo Marcos (inks). This was the second installment of a short four issue mini-series in which the secret origins of various Teen Titans members was told in detail for the very first time. This key page showcases the origin of the young lass Raven and features her melancholy mother Arella, who watches sadly from the shadowy distance as her daughter Raven is raised by Azar, the spiritual leader of the world Azarath. Because Raven was the offspring of her human mother and a very powerful demon-lord named Trigon, she was cruelly denied any emotional bond with her mother Arella, since Azar feared that if that natural maternal relationship was allowed to develop, Raven's dark passions and influence of her evil father Trigon would eventually grow in power and overtake her soul. Writer Marv Wolfman wonderfully explores the deep love and longing between Raven and her mother and their desire to be at one another's side. This page offers a myriad of wonderful full images and close-ups of the young Raven in costume, as she learns to use her various empathic powers, such as the secrets of instantaneous travel, how to flow between dimensions and the ability to control the myriad pathways to her desired destination. All in all, this piece presents Pérez at the peak of his prowess with exquisite finishes by Marcos that represents a significant moment in Teen Titans history. Signed by both George Pérez and Marv Wolfman in bottom margin. Social/Sharing |

Marvelous origin page for Raven of the Teen Titans by the great George Perez. I love the storytelling here as Raven describes how she grew up and became the woman she is today. I love the way the different parts of her story are interwoven into one big illustration. The seamless way that Perez does this is remarkable, but so is much of his art. Perez seemed to know just how to tell any story in the most accessible and easily understood manner. What a fabulous pick-up, congrats!
