Description12x18 prisma-color on BristolDone, save a bit of nit picking before getting a scan tomorrow. This has been a journey, revisiting a piece from 37 years ago! My original vision was something with a Pre-Raphaelite atmosphere and modern sensibility. It was complicated reimagining the whole thing in color and keeping the many layers separated. Since this piece is larger than the pen and ink original, there is added breathing room around the characters, which i like very much. The magic here is not represented with flashy psychedelic spells but quietly in subtle details. The iconic window of the Sanctorum is drawn to be an impossible Esher knot. The incense smoke that emirates from a bizarre little hanging brazier manifests into tiny air elementals. The chair has a strange gem eye. Since we now see the cloak of levitation as a somewhat sentient item, that makes this scene a little weird, now. 140 hours of work time. (I kept track, because people always ask) Most of this was 9-12 hour sessions. The secret to this medium is building up layers of fine cross hatching to achieve the rich, sumptuous colors.
