Description

Buchemi has done several of these corner boxes for different teams, but I was the first to commission The New Mutants. He sent regular updates on the progress of the piece after I chose between several layouts; total turnaround time was about three months.

More than any other super-team that comes to mind, the New Mutants need to have distinctive heads since they all wear the same costume. Buchemi achieved that nicely. I showed him Zachary Baldus' work as an example of Bobby, and Sienkiewicz for Dani and Illyana. I also opted for "Braids Dani" instead of "Headband Dani." Rahne's hair, as with all comic book "redheads," was colored shocking red in the limited palette of 80s comics but would have been auburn in real life. Warlock has a nice metallic sheen on his forehead and some Pepso-Dent-worthy chompers!

Nice mean mug looks with that teenage angst. Buchemi nails the sharp detail that only AA had for the 80's iteration of the team.
