One of a pair I'm posting. Walt worked his heart out on this special, done with Chuck Jones who was long past his best days. No one was very happy with the results, least of all Walt.

Interestingly, this piece is attributed to Kelly's stillborn animation project "We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us" by Andrew and Laqua in their book Walt Kelly: The Life and Art of the Creator of Pogo -- but as CAF's Monty Bali points out, it tracks so closely to a sequence in the 1969 special I'm inclined to believe their attribution is wrong.

These various animated projects are a great What If in the Pogo story. I have no doubt at all that Peanuts would never have become a worldwide phenomenon if Bill Melendez hadn't created those fabulous TV specials. What would have happened if a good Pogo special had become a perennial classic?

These color pencils are nice! It gives the Okefenokee swamp a surreal quality that made Holiday cartoons unique behind the flat colored animated characters.
