DescriptionFollowing on last week post, we get the big reveal of the big villain(s).Spider-Man, the Sentry, the Void and Kingpin all in a spectacular splash. The sense of chaos is excellently depicted here. The heroes bursting in, all the debris above them, the tilted angle Leonardi chose for the ground, the lamps above them which give a sense that the ceiling is somewhat warped… But as always with great storytellers, it’s the details that build a better picture/story. Case in point, the somehow noirish feel of the clothes worn by the Void. It adds atmosphere and styling to a character whose power set is so great and his appearance so basic, he hardly needs any clothes. His apparent absence of features and yet the discerning eye can spot a nose and a chin. All his swirling tendrils within the page which are examples of Leonardi’s usual artistic spontaneity. If you look at both the Sentry and Spider-Man, their body placement is a continuation of the previous panel. And yet, it seems like Sentry is braking in somehow, like he is actually walking on air as his momentum slows down (and yes in the end, I’ll admit he does look a bit static for a flying character here). Leonardi’s Spidey is fantastic as always, both dynamic and just a little bit eery. My favorite part is the seemingly lifeless Kingpin. He is being impaled by the Void, which is creepy enough in itself, but the fact that Leonardi and/or Austin chose to have his mouth slightly open with a bit of Void’s blackish goo inside is a detail that confers a true horror feel to the scene (imho). As I said last week, this may not be Austin’s tighter inks ever on Leonardi (or anyone else for that matter) but having them reunite on paper remains a pleasing idea. Social/Sharing |

This is an excellent Leonardi example. Austin did a great job inking it, because by this point in time he was already acquiescing to the pencillers' styles more than he used to, so he was doing what any great inker SHOULD do, embellish the pencils while trying to stick to the artist's vision. Great stuff!

I love his work and Leonardi is definitely an "artist's artist" but I'm always surprised he didn't become an even bigger fan favorite. Even now, he has that mix of cartoony-ness and realism that should make him a bigger deal. Regardless, this page shows off so many of his strengths.

Leonardi should be on all the books! Love the perspective here.

Rick's trademark lines are always a welcome site. Nice splash.

Really dig how you can't immediately see the Void here! Man...Leonardi is just so good. Oh yeah there's Austin too :) Another great example from this dynamic duo, F M, congrats!
