Description

Posted for Neal Adams’ birthday 6/15/1941. This is the Sunday strip for Buck Rogers in the 25th Century from May 17, 1981. The Buck Rogers strip came back because of the Gil Gerard and Erin Gray TV series revival of the property (thank Star Wars). The strip did not adapt the show and followed their own stories. I got this from Neal’s family with a COA. According to them, Neal Adams filled in for his friend, regular artist Gray Morrow who was Sick for a few weeks. For the dailies, Denys Cowan did the pencils and Neal inked them. For six Sundays (per Paul Michael Moon Rogers) Neal Adams did the pencils and inks by himself. This has that art style he did from that era with more of the magazine fantasy look. Adam’s superhero figures and full page design with lots of tangents are present. It’s got Buck, Wilma, a couple of red shirts, plus is that lady the Scarlet Witch?
Neal was one of the best storytellers and detonated the new way to do comic books and fought for artists rights. He was there to usher in the Bronze Age of comics. There will be a set of IDW Artist Editions of Neal Adams work coming later this year. If you don’t know the history, look him up. His legacy can be felt all over comics, comics in movie and TV media, and even live claim shows!

An excellent piece of artwork. Many congrats, Marcus! And, yes, my first reaction too was: is that the Scarlet Witch?

Neal moves your eye along the page like a master mason laying a stone wall. Spot-on anatomy and the gorgeous detail we've come to expect and respect!

A tremendous artist and Buck Rogers a tremendous influence on the generations of artists -- spanning comics and film and beyond -- that followed.

Great choice not to follow the designs or stories of the tv show, although now I want to see what Adams might have done with Twiki or Hawk.

So nice to see this again, and on Neals birthday no less.  Had the pleasure of seeing it in person and it's just as beautiful as I remember.  Congrats Marcus, and Happy Birthday Neal.

Very cool!  I had no idea that Neal had filled in on the strip in the early 80s.

Excellent score Marcus. Neal actually did 6x Sundays on this strip between 26 April 1981 and 24 May 1981.

The style is very much in keeping with his Continuity advertising and early Continuity Comics work. That is, right up until and including the 2nd to last panel. But the Scarlet Witch in the final panel is more a cross of both his 60's/70's work and his 80's work. Really cool. It's very fortuitous that it comes with a COA, otherwise nobody would ever be able top tell if it was truly an authentic Neal Adams piece. Every page of comic art should come with one. They're SO useful!

Very cool piece and I was unaware of Neal's work on Buck Rogers until now.  There is always something to learn and I can certainly see Neal's work in this piece.

Incredible example of Neal Adams' work! I wasn't aware he'd filled in on this strip but you can sure see it when you look at the page. I always thought Neal's work seemed to be inspired by photography in terms of the composition, the way he drew bodies and clothing and faces. For example I love the expressions on the faces of the two characters in the bottom panels (Yes, one of them looks like Wanda), he really captured their expressions well. I also love the way he drew hands--Look at the hands on the two bottom panels--Neal's hands have bones and knuckles in them. Lots of artists don't understand anatomy as well as Neal. He was an incredible draftsman who inspired a lot of artists.

Very nice pick! And if the mystery woman is not Wanda Maximoff, I'll bet she's a close relative!
