Description"By the Bethesda Fountain" is the name Charles Vess graced this commission with. The idea for this one had been stuck in my head for a while. Aside from the gorgeous 80s cover work on Spidey, I have this core memory of a gorgeous story of black suit Spidey, stuck in a blizzard in NYC. Ten year old me was enthralled by those panels with a beautifully drawn black suit Spidey, contrasted by a white snow storm in Central Park. As I grew up reading translations of Spidey's 80s & 90s adventures in the in early 00s, I only discovered years later that this was a back-up story originally published in Amazing Spider-Man #277 - written and drawn by Charles. When I got approached for his commission list this year, I knew this was a special opportunity and I knew what I wanted to go with. I gave the black suit & snowy NYC prompts, and Charles did the rest - working his magic. The execution couldn't have been handled better. You feel Charles guiding your eye from the top left to the bottom right. We start with the loose cityscape; follow his diagonal direction through the woods and icy winds to arrive at the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. At the forefront, we can feel the motion on Spidey, rushing and gliding through the snow. This commission was published in his recent "Studio Pieces" art book and was done in pencils on an oversized 13x17 sheet of paper. It's not quite art board, as this is thinner paper stock. Beautiful! A Vess piece would be an event anyway, but this is beautiful.

Wow! This is so awesome. And a piece that really only could be accomplished in pencil--so delicate and subtle, a perfect way to showcase this ethereal scene. Jealous!

Looks like an illustration right out of magazine like the New Yorker to show a slice of life which just happens to be on a frozen icy day where even a Spider-Man has to worry about slipping.

Thanks so much for the nice comment, Kahlil! Vess was one of those grandmasters that I never expected to own a piece of! Very happy to have been proven wrong.
