Description

In the early Bronze Age, the loosened comics code allowed for a spate of horror monster titles at both Marvel and DC. Marvel's 'Tomb of Dracula' comics series ran for 70 issues throughout the 1970s. It was replaced by a black and white 'Tomb of Dracula' magazine which only ran for six issues in 1980, giving Gene Colan a continued showcase for his work with Tom Palmer.

As a child, I only read color comics. But now I recognize how the black and white format gave artists more space to fullly render the original art. I have been looking for a Colan page for a while and was glad to find one from his Dracula work. The grey tones indicating night allow for negative space to show the light shining from the lamp.

Always a fan of these heavily ink washed pages.

The teamwork of their artistry is unleashed in this b&w format!  The tones gave us the dark mood of the 70's horror genre that was prevalent in comics and the movies as a reflection of the general fears in the greater world.

Love the art from these Marvel magazines. The wash and tones on this page is spectacular!
