DescriptionWhen most people think of Bill Sienkiewicz they think of Elektra: Assassin, or his New Mutants run. Some think of his inks on Daredevil: End of Days or maybe his early Moon Knight work. But not me. I think of Vampires. More specifically those beyond the city formerly known as Barrow. I was a huge 30 Days of Night fan since the day it was released, and I tried to get them all.I remember Beyond Barrow as being the first time that the story I was looking forward to, took a back seat to the art. I was enamored with the work Sienkiewicz laid out on the pages, it was so different from the Templesmith books. I was enamored by the art. I found myself just staring at the pages and not even trying to read the words. I would just stare….and stare….and stare. Every time my eyes shifted on the page, I would notice another detail that I would swear wasn’t there just a few seconds ago. With the OA in hand now I don’t have to worry about the words getting in the way. I can stare unobstructed. It’s painted on a violet colored watercolor paper. This explains why he used so much white, and how he maintained the consistent darkness throughout. I’m still not 100% sure how I came across this page. Best I can figure is “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” but more like “two degrees of Ben Templesmith”. Somehow Templesmith (which is a standard search I use), led to 30 Days of Night, which led to Beyond Barrow, which led to this page on a website in Italy. Five days later it was in my hands. (I wonder if that was supposed to be Italy that was hidden under the word balloon on the published page). When I visited Utqiagvik in 2019 I couldn’t find anyone who had heard of the books or the movie. Maybe I should have asked more people? Or maybe the vampires had everyone brainwashed? Italy looks like a dangling boot on this piece. Really great concept and execution! The vamps can thrive in this section of the planet that have the gloomy weather almost year round. Sienkiewicz has a wide variety of projects through the years, this like many of his works attack the senses in a visceral manner!

I love Sienkiewicz, so I love this piece. I've also always loved vampires, but have to say I never read 30 Days of Night even though I was curious about it when it first came about. Maybe some day.....

I definately do not think of this when I think of Sienk, but that doesn't make it uncool to me - this is very cool. I feel like I'm trying to solve a riddle out of the Davinci Code when looking at this, guess I need to read it now! Nice pickup Scott
