DescriptionSecret Invasion was a fun idea from Bendis. Where I found that the initial miniseries was a bit generic, only delivering the major blockbuster beats of it, great characters moments could be found in the tie ins, especially if written by Bendis, but also in the peripheral miniseries such as the Inhumans one.(Truth be told, my point of entry was mostly Tom Raney’s art here which I have always loved and followed on any project he has been attached but it remained enjoyable as a whole, if only for his great art). The splash speaks for itself here as we have Triton, one of my fav’ visual of the royal family, going on a chase on another planet in order to defeat the Skrulls where he finds a bunch of…Tritons :) Tom did a fantastic job here. First at showing how surprised Triton is to find so many others who look like him. Then with the overall composition as you really get a sense of them swarming him from above, in a circle form like some sharks would. The look on the other character very similar and yet subtly different from Triton (the lack of pupils, the longer eyebrows, etc…), giving them a more alien look to the one we are accustomed to. Raney also effortlessly gives us a sense that they are indeed underwater and yet there is no bubble to be seen nor undersea plant life to indicate it, just the body language of the character is sufficient. The rocks on the ocean floor really ground the scene and play into the composition to centre our hero. And let’s not forget the usual strong figure work from Tom (and the eerie sexiness of that girl above Triton). Hanna is an inker whom I find was always serviceable, never bad nor exceptional, but he has always complimented Raney’s work quite well. The works he did on the rocks is particularly nice here. I also like that given the undersea nature of the scene and the color of the characters, they did not over render it at all, keeping it light so that the colorist could do his job. In the end, this is a very strong splash by one vastly overlooked artist and storyteller. Social/Sharing |

Triton? Who cares! Tritonette is hot and the REAL star of this show! Great art by Raney/Hanna, indeed.

Can I assume you are speaking about Tritonette and not Triton here? ;)

Underrates Raney...just loving his expressions here and overall cartoony look mixed with some realistic rendering. And of course you've got uber prolific inker Hanna enhancing them lines! Great stuff all around, congrats!
