DescriptionWhen I started collecting, I set an objective of examples from 3 dearly beloved nostalgia stories. Last year I was able to complete the trifecta. But, if 3 actually means 4, then this would be the Red King of my Hellfire Club. Kingdom Come, like Watchmen, is a deep exploration of the superhero genre and the human psyche. Reading it was, like for it's narrator, a revelation. I'm beyond thrilled to add this incredible example to the collection. Artistically, Ross is 100% dialed in and going for the gold. These large-art pages are a sight to behold. The colors are beyond vivid, and the precision is mind-boggling. I was particularly struck by the color gradient on this page, moving from light to dark as Superman descends to meet his counterpoint. The visual storytelling is also superb. No words are needed to tell us that the house of Wayne has fallen. Superman silently floating down into the cave is breathtaking. At the bottom we have a wonderful depiction of all the Bat-Cave essentials, including those singular, Fleischer-inspired, Bat-Mechs. In terms of the story, this page starts an eight page sequence in which Superman and Batman are reacquainted, and come to understand where the battle lines are drawn. The dialogue on this page was always one of my favorite bits - "I bow to your superior wisdom." Indeed. The way Bruce prods at Clark throughout the ensuing exchange is bloody brilliant. Thanks to Joseph for working with me on this, and a special shout out to the McDonaldsCon where I was able to pick this up. #OAX2025. See you in San Diego! Social/Sharing |

Absolutely fabulous page from KC. I just love the depiction of the Batcave, which I think of as another character in the DC universe. Every artist has their own vision how it should look.

Oh, you lucky, lucky man. IMHO, Marvels and Kingdom Come represented Ross' best work. To this day.

congrats M. L. any painted Ross page is gold. but this is such a pivital moment in the story as old allies will again dsagree on how justice should be served. That last panel of the batcave in disarray is beautifully layed out and painted.

When the page comes home
And the art's not fold
And the paints we see
Are all Wayne's of old
When your dreams all fail
And Magog still rails
He's the worst of all
But A Ross one grail
The mansion hides the truth
It wants to shelter you
Bat with the beast inside
There's nowhere we cave hide
No matter what 90's
It's still the Waid we read
This is my Kingdom Come
This is my Kingdom Come

Truly epic. Have always loved seeing his interior work. That full on cover beauty gets to shine in the interior panels, and I don't know if an example of it could be any more beautiful.

This is obviously a gorgeous page and I completely agree about it being fantastic both visually and as a piece of sequential storytelling. Kingdom Come is probably Ross' and Mark Waid's best work and a great response to the height of 90s edginess. Incredible pickup.
