DescriptionHoward Chaykin's roman a clef leaves no closet unopened as he explores the seamy sides of the comics industry's business practices. Each issue visits milestones from the Golden Age (not so golden for creators as for fans) to the modern era. Chaykin drew the elements of each panel separately, then digitally composited them; see the additional image for the final page, in which this image was incorporated into the third panel. It shows the early days of Chaykin's protagonists, each of whom is a composite of a type of artist: Ray Clarke (Jewish, a middling talent, trying to get by), Benita Heindel (a woman in a man's business, a la Marie Severin), and Ted Whitman (likewise chafing against his "token black" status). These three high school art students are trying to break into the world of professional comics in 1940. Having just been rejected by Dan Fleischer (representing Will Eisner), they discuss Sid Mitchell (Jack Kirby). The back of the page contains a headshot of a woman, but I couldn't find it in the published book. Chaykin has a reputation as a curmudgeon, and one struggles to catch his characters in the act of being happy or kind. But that doesn't mean the stories (his own, and those gathered from colleagues) aren't true. Social/Sharing |

Nice pick up, a good reprsentative panel from the book. Some of the characters are easy to recognise like Marie. Others are difficult.

Looks great as the central image of the page. It's a way for Chaykin to leave behind the real struggles of himself and a pastiche of the people that came before with some inside baseball knowledge. Although I don't think they had to have a token anything back then.
