DescriptionJohn Byrne. This page hangs on my wall, archival matted and framed behind UV protected glass. This is my favorite issue from John Byrne's all too short Hulk run from issues 314-319. In fact, this is my favorite page from it! This issue had a raging Hulk (now separated from Banner) going against 4 Avenger powerhouses (Iron Man, Wonder Man, Hercules, Namor). On this page, Doc Samson enters the battle with this new look. I really liked John Byrne's redesign of Samson. Somehow, he made it look cool. There weren't many other artists that could quite do Samson justice in this outfit, I feel. In days long past, when eBay was a treasure trove of comic art, this page popped up! I was somehow able to reel it in from 'capshockeyfan'. I had a screenshot of this auction win at one time. Over the years and many hard drive swaps or crashes ago, it was lost. This scan is from the framed art which I had a tough time getting due to glaring. I have an older, smaller image prior to framing in additional images. Thank you, Mr. Byrne for your short, memorable run on Hulk and for making such a cool Doc Samson! Social/Sharing |

I know Byrne's had so many renowned runs on so many characters but I think "Hulk" first when I think "Byrne" and it's due to this run! So much energy and action combined with some perfect storytelling...I knew it as a kid but didn't really know how to explain it that way, lol. And case in point. All out Samson vs Avengers battle! My fave issue is 317 due to the Doc vs Hulk battle pages and I'm lucky to have nabbed one from 319. Big congrats, man!

Pivotal moment when Doc Sampson enters the fray and the Avengers concentrate on him while Hulk wanders away. A classic era of Byrne and the art is some of his finest of the mid 80's.

Byrnes short run on Hulk was genuinely incredible. What a page you have! A lot of creators seem to forget or not understand that the title is meant to be reflective of the contents. Hulk at its best is incredible (that was intended) and at its worst awful. It would make things a lot easier if they changed names when the titles go bad periodically, or in sadder cases for years. Like the Awful Spider-Man, the Awful Four and so on. Not expecting Marvel or other companies to go the honest route though.

Love this page, and I'd agree it was the best issue of the run.
