Digging deeper into the DCU.

In 1992 Rags Morales co-created and pencilled a revised Black Condor series for DC comics.

I saw the cover to #1 and I was hooked. Love that cover. Rags Morales was new to the scene and I enjoyed his art. I really liked this series but the series only lasted 12 issues and when it ended I wanted more. Never happened, he appeared in Justice League for a bit but that was about it.

Rags went on to fame and fortune doing Hawkman and Identity Crises and the New 52 Superman. I had always wanted the cover to Black Condor #1, but I've never seen it for sale or any other Black Condor art for that matter. Fellow CAFer Greg McKee has a great collection of Black Condor art. You can see it here Rags Morales' Black Condor art. I've always been envious of his pages.

For a title that didn't sell well and I'm sure has very few fans, pages don't come up for sale.

Then in 2020, a fellow on eBay was putting up early Morales art for sale. It included unpublished and published pieces and Black Condor art. Jackpot! After years of wanting Black Condor art I was super excited to finally get some.

Fish eye camera lens for the eagle eyed artist! The Black Condor is a breakout series for Rags and this would have been recognized from an artistic standpoint no matter who was on it.

I've always had a thing for winged characters, so I love Black Condor's design just for that reason alone, though I've never read the series. Although you haven't been able to acquire the cover to the first issue, you can't really be too upset about owning the next earliest one, as this one is pretty cool! Pretty amazing, looking at the character designs in Greg McKee's collection, that Rags was already working on this series for 1-2 years before this series ultimately launched!
