In April 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes ordered Secretary of the Treasury John Sherman to investigate the nation's custom houses. The Jay Commission submitted its first report on the New York City Customs House, and it was very unflattering. The commission called for a 20% reduction in workers, and that the political gang of New York Senator Roscoe Conkling and Collector of the Port of New York (and future President) Chester Arthur had to go. Conkling hoped that Arthur, a far less divisive figure, could weather the storm, but soon rumors flew around Washington and New York that Hayes was going to remove Arthur. The spotlight intensified on Arthur after follow up reports by the Jay Commission were tendered. Both Arthur and his subordinate Alonzo Cornell were fired in July 1878. Offered here is 9-3/8x12.25" artboard w/ink original art by Frederick Burr Opper (1857-1937), comic strip pioneer and creator of Happy Hoolligan. Label on back bears "Out You Go!" title as well as "Puck" publication name and references Arthur's firing, showcasing caricatures of both Hayes and Arthur, w/Hayes ("Charges" in hand) giving Arthur the boot of "Removal" from the New York Custom House while the US Capitol Building looms in the distance. Opper has signed at lower right. Uneven markings, but art remains complete. Back of artboard has aforementioned label as well as three collector inkstamps and inked price. Margins feature brown tape borders. Art has some scattered dust soiling and spots of fainting staining and is Fine/VF overall, but would make for nice framed display.
