Description

In a horrific sequence, the AI known as Doctor Loveless lives up to its name. Each imprisoned clone is murdered by its robot caretaker. Nathan and Xenia watch helplessly from an inactive control room:

“Do something! We have to help them!”

“I'm trying, Xenia, but everything is blocked. The system is eliminating all the evidence of this madness, and I think our turn will come soon.”

Nathan is right. A squad of armed "janitors" has also arrived to eliminate Nathan and Xenia, but Nathan gets the drop on them, with the pistol he took from Rogher earlier:

“Here we are… The entrance to the Habitat is right down here.”

“Wait for us on the flyer. We'll go in to find that bastard and the surviving clone, and if the robot units haven't already torn them to pieces, we'll send them to hell.”

“I'll save you the trouble, guys. I'm right here. Lay down your weapons, and no tricks.”

The slaughter of the clones is the darkest moment I've read so far in Nathan Never. As bad as it is, the artists opted for low resolution depictions on the monitor screens in the first panel. In an American story, Nathan would have pulled out some solution to stop the massacre, but European stories have a different sensibility, and the hero often doesn’t get what he hoped for.
