DescriptionI have a number of Pogo dailies in my collection, but this is now the only one featuring the main character. The artwork in this daily from March 23, 1968 is gorgeous, with those wonderful Kelly trees in the Okefenokee Swamp, but the main thing that drew me to the piece is the content. The boat is labeled "The August Derleth", an homage to the author, editor and publisher who called Wisconsin home. Madison, where Derleth worked for years, is on one end of the boat, and Sauk City, where Derleth lived, is on the other side.Derleth was a major collector of comic books and comic strip artwork, with his collection residing at the State Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin. Walt Kelly was one of Derleth's favorite cartoonists, and coincidentally, it was Kelly's work that caused Derleth to resign his newspaper position. Derleth was a longtime literary editor for The Capital Times in Madison. In 1960, Derleth wrote a book review of Kelly's book, "Ten Ever-Lovin- Blued-Eyed Years with Pogo", but The Capitol Times refused to run the review since Pogo ran in the competing paper, The Wisconsin State Journal. After 19 years with the paper, Derleth resigned. I'm sure Kelly was aware of Derleth's love the strip, which makes this a very nice association piece. Social/Sharing |

Journalists resigning from newspapers seems very timely. I guess media being owned by billionaries have a vested interest in controlling the narrative.
