DescriptionIn 1946 there were no creator's rights. Milton Caniff had created and drawn Terry and the Pirates for over 13 years, making it a very successful strip. Yet all rights for the strip belonged to the Chicago Tribune newspaper syndicate. In a bold move, Caniff negotiated with the Field Enterprises syndicate offering to create a new strip for them... if he could retain ownership. Thus, Caniff's final episode of Terry and the Pirates appeared in December of 1946, (then George Wunder took over the strip) and his new strip, Steve Canyon, debuted in 168 newspapers weeks later on January 13 1947. Caniff continued to draw Steve Canyon for over forty years until it ended on 4 June 1988... almost two months after he passed away. This is a daily from 30 September 1947, during Steve Canyon's first year. I liked it because... it had planes! Not a great shot of Steve; but it will do. Plus, this has an example of Caniff writing as the character speaks, adopting their vernacular and foreign accent. Some might call this racist... or at the least non-PC. But you certainly heard them as if speaking in a film and knew where they were from. The art is rendered with pencil, pen, brush, and ink. The daily has a large image area of 6.5 x 21.5" on a larger 7.25 x 22.5" piece of 2-ply bristol. The art is signed by Caniff in the last panel and dated in the first. This is also an example of how comic art was treated in 1947. The last panel had some heavy editing, redrawing, and repositioning of the plane. There was no computer images in 1947! Curiously, this one was not inscribed to anyone and survived before the bulk of them were donated to Ohio State University. As usual with me, shipping is not included in the price, and musty be paid by the buyer. I prefer checks or money orders. If you need to use PayPal, I need payment sent as a "gift" or via "Friends and Family" I have been asked if I will ship to Europe... I will, but it is expensive and if you need to use PayPal for an international transaction I warn that PayPal requires items of this value to be sent express (to get a signature) and insured (which declares the value for VAT). Just so you are aware. Social/Sharing |
