DescriptionOffered here is daily # from Jeff Hawke, a British science fiction comic strip created by Sydney Jordan that ran in the Daily Express from 15 February 1955 to 18 April 1974. Throughout that time, Jordan had "written or co-written" and drawn 6,474 strips.Sydney Jordan was born Dundee, Scotland, 1928. He studied aeronautical engineering at Miles Aircraft's Aeronautical Technical School in Reading, Berkshire, but returned to Dundee and worked as an assistant to comics artist Bill McCail, and learned by studying the work of Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff, and Stan Drake. In 1951 he assisted Len Fullerton on his comic strip Dora, Toni and Li. He sought a strip where he could draw science fiction, exploiting his skills in drawing airplanes. In 1955 he met Eric Souster and Jim Gilbert in London, two friends with whom he had served in the R.A.F. Together they created the character of Jeff Hawke and took the idea for Jeff Hawke to the Daily Express in 1954. Jordan's friend Willie Patterson came aboard as a writer in 1956, and continued to write until 1969. Jordan wrote the later strips himself. Initially, Jeff Hawke, appeared as an ex-R.A.F. pilot (just like Jordan) was a rather ordinary, Flash Gordon-like hero. The early plots were standard adventure and science fiction themes common in pulp comics and fiction of the age. Patterson changed this by employing plot lines that were more adult and required thought. That left Jordan to concentrate on drawing and improved his style to a highly suggestive, realistic, contrasted black-and-white mark. This is a daily from the period many fans consider to be “prime” Jeff Hawke. Pass the Parcel was the 23rd Jeff Hawke story arc. It encompassed strips H2725–2816, and ran from 3 Jan 1963 to 20 April 1963. It came at a crucial point in the space race. Remember, Yuri Gagarin had the first orbital space flight in Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961. Gagarin's flight led US President John F. Kennedy to raise the stakes on May 25, 1961, by asking the US Congress to commit to the goal of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" before the end of the decade and by 1962 there had been a lot of activity In “Pass the Parcel” Hawke is leading the ‘third expedition to Mars’, suggesting that the first two were American and Russian. This Mars has no Martians (living or dead) or mythical canals; it is the Mars of science, not decades of fanciful science fiction. I like this daily primarily due to the detail of the rocket (more a V2 than a Redstone) as it readies for blast-off. The original is rendered in pen, brush, and ink with zip-a-tone. It has an image area of 15 x 4.25" on a larger (16.5 x 5.5") piece of 4-ply artboard. The art was done 61 years ago but is in excellent shape; note that some of the word balloons were added during production and have discolored somewhat. The original was been signed by Sydney in the lower right; he has also put story notes on the verso. As usual with me, shipping is not included in the price and must be paid by the buyer. I prefer checks or money orders. If you need to use PayPal, I need payment sent as a "gift" or via "Friends and Family". I apologize in advance if that is an inconvenience, I have been asked if I will ship to Europe... I will, but it is expensive and if you need to use PayPal for an international transaction I warn that PayPal requires items of this value to be sent express (to get a signature) and insured (which declares the value for VAT). Just so you are aware. Social/Sharing |
