DescriptionDigging deep deep into the DCU.From 1985 comes this cool title splash from issue #4 of the minis series Jonni Thunder aka Thunderbolt. Jonni Thunder was a private detective who came into the possession of an ancient statue which gave her the power to become a living Thunderbolt. Or something like that, it's been a while. She first appeared in Jonni Thunder #1. Looking back, she was an updated version on Johnny Thunder and his lightning bolt. I wasn't too familiar with all the JSA characters so it went over my head. I'm not sure if she was meant to replace Johnny Thunder, I'm not sure what Johnny's status was at the time. I came to know her from her appearances in Infinity Inc and then went back to read her mini. The mini was good. She was a cool character, strong, smart and capable. Would be fit in perfectly in today's world. The Thunderbolt turned out to be an alien and turned evil and she lost her powers. She continued to be a supporting character in Infinity Inc until the book ended. I don't know if she's been used since. Cool little blast from the past of a forgotten character. Jonni Thunder aka Thunderbolt #4 pg 1 "Farewell, My Lightning?" by artist Dick Giordano. On 11X17 board. 1985 Social/Sharing |

Fitting that Thunderbolt would drive a T-Bird. Sweet page with great inks!

Pretty cool that they didn't need an overlay or red lines for that third panel effect. Lot of exposition above and below each tall panel to get us right into the story of this title page.

I never read the Jonni Thunder mini-series, but I often wished I had. Like you, I never realized the name was shared by a JSA character at the time, and only realized it many years later. I don't believe they would've used a completely different character and given her the same name. Besides, the concept is similar so I think they wanted to update the concept for the 80's.
