DescriptionOriginal watercolor from Bill Watterson to Lee Salem, Universal Press Syndicate editor for his retirement. The work highlights the support his editor gave to Bill to keep control of the distribution of Calvin and Hobbes, away from mediums he felt would take away from his creation such as movies, mugs, and other forms of mass distribution.Social/Sharing |

It's not something we usually get to see and the self portrait shows how Watterson has kept hidden behind the scenes!

My supervisor at work is the biggest Calvin and Hobbes fan I've ever known. Even bigger than me. Anyway, his mom came home from shipping one-day years ago, and told him about this man she'd seen wearing a Calvin and Hobbes shirt as she was coming out of the supermarket. She told the man how much her son loved Calvin and Hobbes, and he'd love to have that shirt. The man told her he'd gladly let him have the shirt if she wanted (he was wearing a collared shirt underneath) and she said, "No, I couldn't take your shirt, but thank you." My supervisor asked her what the man looked like. It was definitely Bill Watterson. He lived in the area here in Ohio. He was SO upset. He knew it had to be Bill, because didn't do mass merchandising, as we all know.
This cartoon is so very cool. I'm sure Bill needed a LOT of protecting!
