Description"Guadalcanal" by Paul S. Newman. April-June 1964.The Navy is pounding Guadalcanal with bombs and shells as the First Marine Division's landing craft approach the island. A Marine in the landing craft asks why they are taking the island. We go back to the point after the victory at Midway when military planners are seeking to keep the initiative by attacking the Japanese in the Solomon Islands. They receive alarming reports of Japanese activity on Guadalcanal in the Solomons. A British coastal watcher reports the Japanese are making rapid progress on the Guadalcanal airfield, from which they can attack the lifeline between Australia and America. Social/Sharing |

oh nice a story from another issue of Combat! each panel is great here from the group scene, to the battleship, to the map of the war theater/location, and the reconissance mission in the final panel. awesome. congrats Peter!

These true life history lessons brought the war home. The opening pages set the scene with vivid clarity of their urgency.

I really think it would be worthwhile to seek out as many copies of these comics as possible and get kids in school reading again and learning about history.

That's a great idea. Some issues are online so a teacher could print/copy them or share the link.

Combat 12? What happened to Ensign Reed? Did he survive? Did he get to fulfil his dream of opening a small danish store and sell delightful pastries? And did his back order of checkered tablecloths come in? Good God, man. The suspense.
