Description

On this day, eighty years ago, 27 January 1945, Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp was liberated.

Of the 1,3 million people sent to Auschwitz, 1,1 million were murdered. The number of victims includes 960.000 Jews (865.000 of whom were gassed on arrival), 74.000 non-Jewish Poles, 21.000 Romani, 15.000 Soviet prisoners of war, and up to 15.000 others. Those not gassed were murdered via starvation, exhaustion, disease, individual executions, or beatings. Others were killed during medical experiments (from Wikipedia).

Among the Jews deported to Auschwitz, there were Anne Frank and her sister Margot; they later died in February or March 1945 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Anne wrote her famous Diary from 1942 to 1944, narrating her life hiding from Nazis. In this page, she leaves her home in Amsterdam with her family, to hide in a secret attic in a building in the same city. There, she meets Peter, the boy she loved.

Anna Frank, page 6, adaption by Mino Milani from Anne Frank's Diary, published for the first time in 1981 in "No alla violenza. Martin Luther King, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Massimiliano Kolbe, Anna Frank", EMP (Edizioni Messaggero Padova), and later in Messaggero dei Ragazzi number 8 (April) and 9 (May) 1983. 35 x 50 cm, retrocolored.

Incredible textures and slick crosshatch illustration that have an undertone of sorrow and fear.  A bright and innocent face emerges to courageously lead us through this tale.
