DescriptionHappy Birthday to Denys Cowan!I didn't read Watchman, I didn't read The Dark Knight Returns (I read those as back issues) but I did read Denny O'Neil and Denys Cowan's The Question. It was a different kind of superhero book, one where the world is not Black or white but different shades of gray, where the hero doesn't always win and when he does at what cost? It simply raised questions about all aspects of politics and human nature. Stories end without closure in an attempt to find your own meaning. It’s a series that tackles religion, alcoholism, corruption and the cost of violence. It was a game changer for me. It opened my eyes to different kinds of comics, not just super-heroes. It inspired me to read more, different kinds of books. I would have never read The Art of War without reading The Question. Denys Cowan was the artist for most of the run (I think there was one issue he didn't draw) it was the best artwork of his career, up to that point. His fluid style meshed perfectly with O'Neil's flowing storyline. Cowan is able to show martial arts in action, the art is precise and kinetic. We also get intense close ups of sketchy faces, wide shots of a city beat to hell, and an atmosphere to match. The art was perfect for the stories being told. I loved it. Issue #25 is a great example of all this. It also includes all the big players in the series. Love interest and mayoral candidate; Myra Connelly-Fermin, corrupt cop gone straight; Izzy O’Toole, philosophical adviser; Aristotle “Tot” Rodor, and the death corrupt former Mayor Wesley Fermin. Denys Cowan is the man. One of my all time favorites. To have a complete issue from The Question is unreal. To have the art to any complete issue is unreal, but to have one from one of your favorite artist on one of the titles he is known for. Wow! Still blows my mind and I've had this for 15+ years. I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for looking. And a thank you to Denys Cowan for all the joy and entertainment you provided. Happy Birthday! The Question #25 pg. 1 "Skells" by artists Denys Cowan and Malcolm Jones III. On a 19X13 board. 1989 Social/Sharing |

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

We've only just Questions to live
White paint and promises
I miss Cowan and we're on birthday
We've only begun
Before the assassin we fly
So Denny wrote to move
He starts out writing to earn Cowan
And yes, we've just Question
Share illustrations that are new to us
Watching the Skells along the rage
Talking it over just the cool Denys
Working together page to page
Together

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end
