Description

Dave Sim�s Cerebus began as a Conan parody but became a pulpit for every topic under the sun that Sim wanted to address. During the �Melmoth� storyline in issues #139-150, Cerebus believed his girlfriend Jaka to be dead, so he spent the entire sequence sitting on the porch of a tavern, clutching Jaka�s doll Missy.

The main character thus disposed of, Dave Sim used the bulk of this twelve issue run to depict the last days of raconteur Oscar Wilde, who died in a Paris hotel room under the registered name of Melmoth. That in turn was the title of an 1820 novel about a man who had sold his soul to Satan and then tried to get out of the deal.

Gerhard earned his fame providing amazing backgrounds for the Cerebus series, but of course he is just as good with the characters when need arises. He has retired from art production due to difficulty in his hand, but he still had pieces to offer at OAX 2025. I chose this 9x12 sheet with a pensive Cerebus in Gerhard's typical immaculate detail. Give him a hug! Gerhard, I mean. Cerebus would probably bite your hand off.

is it Cerebus clutching Missy, or Missy clutching Cerebus? That's the real meat of this philsophical sandwich right here. Nice Gerhard piece!

It's great cartooning as Gerhard can make you feel the full range of emotions of the character to be even more 3 dimensional than some people we know in real life.
