DescriptionDrinky Winkys anyone!?The Heritage write up described this strip by saying it evoked the "decay of a humanity corrupted by fear and frustration. Burns' clinically precise art excels at creating a sense of dread and unease." While I agree that Burns' work often does those things, I didn't feel one iota of any of those dark emotions when I read this one. I felt no dread or unease at all! Instead this Dog Boy example is light and quirky and fun, which are all also things that Burns' comics can be as well. It is that juxtaposition of humor and anxiety that really makes his work quite fascinating. This strip originally ran as a serialized strip in alternative newspapers, and was later compiled into a graphic novel by Fantagraphics. Social/Sharing |

I'm with you --- this is a charming piece that screams Charles Burns but doesn't induce unease. Takes me back!

Rondy's so down to Earth and a go getter! She's like Flo from the Alice TV show with Linda Lavin and Vic Tayback. There are no signs of decay here with every stroke of ink made to last.

Okay...be honest. How much did the term 'Drinky Winkys' have to do with procuring this piece? :)

Absolutely superb example of the work of Charlie Burns. The art is so slick and clean and free of extraneous detail, it's almost the opposite of Robert Crumb's work. The lighting is offbeat as well, The blackground are black, the figures are all backlit, but the faces are fully lighted. Burns uses simple camera angles, nothing quirky or tilted or anything odd, it's all pretty straightforward. I'm not sure where the storyline is going, although I suspect, given the obvious naiveté of the lead male, that's its going to get rather kinky. Makes me want to read more, that's for sure. Great pick-up, congrats!
