DescriptionThe Kamandi Challenge was a limited series published by DC comics in 2017. It was published on Jack Kirby's centennial year in honor of his contributions to DC comics. Twelve issues were published in the series; each book with a different comic creator team. Tom King's vision for Issue #9 was to make a twist on the Kamandi-story formula. Instead of the story ending in a cliffhanger; he made the story about the cliffhanger itself. Kamandi is imprisoned in a cave like prison cell with a host of other characters. Robot like guards drag each prisoner one-by-one from the cell, as Kamandi awaits his fate.Issue #9 was my favorite from the series. I was a big fan of Freddie E. Williams II art video tutorials, and I was excited to grab the book off the shelf. Published in black and white, this book was a gnarly read; drawn on the same duo tone art board as the original TMNT books. Each page very atmospheric, peppered with black and white splatter; and the earthy duo tone hatching embodying a dark helpless prison environment. Freddie E. Williams crashed at Kevin Eastman's house for two weeks, and they banged out this book together. Passing each page back and forth melding their art together. Social/Sharing |

Very rare to see the duo tone used today. Even for Eastman who's TMNT art was mainly using that paper. It really gets good depth for b&w comics. Expertly used for a cavernous feel to the setting in this page.

Yup, very true; thanks for the comment!
The primary manufacturer went out of business in the 90s, and Eastman bought their warehouse stock of duo tone paper and chemicals. My understanding is he is now drawing pages on duo tone paper from his personal stock.
